I use my fingers everytime I eat sushi. That's how many people eat it here in Tokyo, particularly those who are known to be sushi-lovers.

The interesting tendency, though, is that the cheaper the sushi bar, the more diners use chopsticks. And because everyone is aware of this tendency, you can look pretty unrefined if you use chopsticks at more expensive places. This is about sushi only, not other kinds of food.

I use whatever is near me. If an eating utensil isn't around, of course, I just use my fingers.

Both, depending on how hungry or busy I am. If I'm just idly eating while at the computer I use my hands.

It depends. Usually with hashi. I only don't if my kid is around. She's in the 'I wanna grab everything stage' so it's easier for me to play keep away without pointy sticks in my hands.

For nigiri-style I use my hands and for maki-style I use chopsticks.

Samurai they smile never

a fork would cut a bit better than you'd expect...or like ^_^

Fingers for sushi and chopsticks for sashimi.

But if I am with at a social function and the majority are using chopsticks for their sushi, I may do so also so as not to call attention to the difference. The exception to that would be when hosting my sushi dinners. Since some new members look to myself and the other host for etiquette guidance, I will stick with my usual preference for fingers.

Or like last night I was already eating everything else with chopsticks, so when my dinner partner offered part of the eel roll I used them rather than switch modes for the one bite.
