Sencha is probably your quinessential Japanese tea. You should be able to findit online from many source and in many forms - loose leaf, pearl and powdered, even in tea bags.
Its is rather astringent compared to the sort of black or oolong teas usually served in England and probably in Germany )is been too many years since I was there to recall for certain). One of my favorite sources for tea if I have to get it shipped is Ten Ren. They are good about their quality and variety and their staff is very knowlegable if you have questions. sencha is probably the most common, matcha seems a bit too expensive for my budget.
If you're ever in London, there is a japancentre in piccadilly [giant screens] and the basement has a tea store which sells an extensive range of green teas. Personally, I prefer Jasmine tea. "I'm sorry, but i must have given you the impression that I actually care about your opinions"

Jasmine and Pouchong have long been my favorites, though I am developing a taste for boricha, but I don't really think of these as Japanese teas. I keep keep sencha, bancha and a little bit of matcha in the house. They are not what I go to first for drinking, but there are some foods that just seem to pair well with them for me. Sort of like some people pair wines.

I forgot to mention that one. Yes, this one is very nice too.
I actually recommend Jasmine tea over sencha if it is the first time your trying out Green Tea. I found Sencha to be a bit strong at first, but i'm used to it now. But Jasmine is just right and not too strong. I think Jasmine is chinese green tea though. |
