Reseach Fish products in Japan
Question list for Japanese people, or people who are living in Japan.

We are a group of six Dutch students, studying 'International Business and Managamant Studies' at 'Avans Hogeschool' in Breda, the Netherlands. This Quarter we have to write a report about whether it is feasible for a certain company to enter the Japanese market. We would be very grateful if you could answer our question list, it would greatly contribute to the reliability of our report.

Please follow the link to go to the question list:

Sustainable Fish in Japan

We would like to thank you in advance for your help !

Kind Regards,

Project Group 02

I saw the survey, are you talking about shipping fish from other countries into Japan and selling them at your own store? That could work, but it costs a ton of money to enter the market, so you'd probably need backing by a big investor or try to partner with someone in Japan. The fish market is extremely competitive and unless you have an edge and the money to make it happen, you won't be able to last.

That said, neighborhood standalone fish stores are long in decline in Japan. Maybe you can focus on a hub strategy where you have a storefront but supply other supermarkets and restaurants. It sounds like you're not interested in being simply a wholesale supplier.

Probably more important than whether or not the fish is sustainable, is the quality and species of the fish. And are we talking farmed fish? I know they're not all equal, but you're going to need strong marketing to persuade housewives your fish is worth the premium. Every premium item requires marketing of some kind here.
