Have you ever watched the 県民SHOW? 99 out of 100 recipes they give on that show invariable start with the announcer listing off "砂糖・みりん・しょうゆ" (sugar, mirin, soy sauce) in that bored tone he always uses. Which is rather ironic on a show the purports to reveal the hidden differences between the various localities of Japan. I swear they should just record him saying that once and reuse it every show. Probably save them a huge chunk of their budget.
Impromptu survey of the nearest Japanese person at hand reveals the following as their image of a "traditional" Japanese breakfast: rice, miso soup, grilled salmon (grilled with a small amount of salt, possibly dipped in soy sauce before eating), natto, tamagoyaki (or a raw egg), nori, and pickled vegetables (such as takuan or baby ume). That's a single meal, by the way.
