How Do you Make Onigiri? - 07-17-2008, 05:36 AM

I've always seen the treat, but I've never tried it.
I'm wondering how you make it. I know with rice.
If someone could tell me how to make onigiri, it'd be much appreciated

if you look in some places, they sell onigiri makers .. like a triangle shaped thing that you put rice in, then press it down with the top. it's like an onigiri cookie cutter. it's what i use because i absolutely suck at trying to make them by hand >_< idk where though because i think my grandparents sent it to us from japan but if you look in asian stores or something you'd probably find it.

Ooh, I'll have to look somewhere then. Thanks.
:P I want to attempt at shaping one by hand. If I fail, I shall go in search of the "onigiri cookie cutter"

I tried fried tofu, which I rinsed, fried with some carrot, and then added a mixture of rice vinegar, shoyu, sake and sugar to the pan and cooked it for a coupel of minutes till the liquid evaporated. That then went in to onigiri. They were not pretty, owing to my incompetence in making onigiri, but they tasted pretty good!

The other day I made some with oshinko and it was a nice finish to lunch. And it kept me from munching on way too much oshinko like when I keep a container of it the office fridge.
