Thumbs up A program I'm working on.. - 01-11-2008, 12:09 AM

Hey people,

I've recently been working on a small program to help people learn Hiragana and Katakana. I'm offering it free to download. People who are in the middle stages learning the Kana will get the best use out of it, as I think the testing function is the most useful part. So far it contains options for testing Hiragana, Katakana or both, browsing through the alphabet, drawing practise, and also the first 145 Kanji (from the Genki series).

Although I have worked on this quite a bit, this is a very early version so expect to see a few bugs and unused features.

Below is a (slightly dated) screenshot showing 4 of the different screens:

You can download the zip file here (no installation needed):

Please note that you will need support for Japanese characters on your computer, as well as the .Net framework!

Please leave some feedback so I can improve the program.

Well...I was actually kinda afraid I would get a virus or something...but it turns out, nothing happened. It brought me to a page, but everything was in jibberish(or greek..?)

So I couldn't make it out.

Once you fix that(or tell me what the heck it is I'm doing wrong) I'll be happy to check it out for you!

Ah, that's a bit strange. You see random things when you click:

http://www.wireless-studios.co.uk/LearnKana.rar

If that is the case, I'm assuming you either have some weird browser or can't handle rar files. I'd suggest right clicking the link and pressing 'Save Link As' or 'Save Target As'.

If you need it, you can use WinRAR from here to unzip the folder.

Let me know if you can't get it working.

Source please.
I have something like this but written in c. I like your painting spot where you can draw the kana. Good work!
Btw, was it written in C# or something else such as VB.NET?

I've moved to uni and the source is at home, but I'm back at the weekend so I'll get it for you then. If you want it, reply to this thread sometime next week so I don't forget to post it! It's written in C#.

I downloaded and tried. Very well thought and the result so far is good for the kana part. The kanji part I wouldn't know coz it won't work. I go to kanji testa and kanji option and the box remain blank. In the last part of kanji you can select only the genki kanji and not the one below genki.

One more thing. I think the draw mode needs a little bit of adjustment too. To see the character you have to draw very slowly otherwise it becomes done in dots.
Go on tho, it can become something really good.

To add to what chryuop said, in 'kanji learn' the boxes aren't blank, but the background remains black so you need to highlight the text in order to read it.

All the kanji boxes are unfinished, though the learn box should have the first 150 or so kanji I think. The learn box is working for me, but it might be a theme issue with the colours of text/box. I'll look at that when I start working on it again (when I get the source to where I am now).

How many total kanji are there? And is there some unicode list that shows every code?
