My favourite for looks is:
みず 水 I dunno, I just like how angular it is. Compounds I like are えい_____ご 英語 and と______しょ___かん 図書館 Although, that very last one (かん) is a bit of a pain in the ass to write with a brush pen... as for 米国 - べいこく another kanji i like, 迚 とても/とて - some way or other, very while very rare it is 国字 - a Japan native character. while you'll probably never see it used, it can be used to say 迚も - とても as in 迚も奇麗だ - very beautiful. |

You know, I think one of my absolute favourite Japanese characters is actually a hiragana....
ゑ Romanized as "we", but considered obsolete since the WW2 era. I might start using it in place of the particle へ on my Japanese homework. That's bound to get a quip from my sensei . But then, if you're a poet or something, you might use it for aesthetic reasons if not in your compos for school. |

As someone who has taught Japanese, as fun as it is to "bring in" those retired characters (and don't get me wrong, I love them, too) making your teacher look goofy and forcing her to explain why this character isn't in use anymore is kind of a low-blow. Yes it exists. No, she wasn't hiding it from you. But it is kind of like spelling "old" as "olde". No, it isn't "wrong", but it doesn't help things.
