tasukete kudasai translation help - 04-30-2008, 05:11 AM

先年__日本へ行きました.
Does this need a particle of any kind? I'm not so sure.

No, you don't need one. I'd use 去年 rather than 先年, though.

thank you everybody this was very helpful. But I don't think my sensei will let me use 去年 because no one learned it in class. we use rainen because we had just learmed the kanji for kimasu and so on.

No, it can't. Even 'wa' has no place in that sentence. Put anything immediately after 昨年 and it will change the meaning of the whole sentence.

You can say 「昨年日本へ行きました。」 ONLY WHENyou have just said something like "I went to England in 2005. In 2006, I went to France."
”昨年は” means 'as for last year', not just 'last year'.

We can NEVER take particles lightly.

Note: I changed the 先年 to 昨年 because I thought you meant 'last year'. The word 先年 means 'some years ago' and is seldom used in Modern Japanese.

昨年 ー sakunen - just to pre-empt the question of how do you read that word. haha.

if you are just wanting to make a sentence with some kanji you have learnt why not use 来年 since you know that.

来年日本へ行きたい - I want to go to Japan next year.
来年日本へ行くつもりです - I plan to go to Japan next year.
