Wait! You want to get the word "linux" tattooed? As the OS name?

It that's what you meant, the word "linux" is written in katakana only, and it's spelled リヌックス RI- NU- KKU- SU or リナックス RI- NA - KKU - SU, depending on the way it's pronounced.

Keep one thing in mind when writing words in japanese : to double a consonant, as in -KKU, you have to write a small TSU before the KU syllabe.
That means, the TSU you'll be using in your tatoo HAS to be smaller than the other symbols. If it won't, your tatoo will be read "rinatsukusu" instead of "rinakkusu", and will have no meaning.

You can write it horizontally RI- NA- small TSU - KU- SU
or vertically
RI
NA
small TSU
KU
SU

i think it's correct (RI - NA - small TSU - KU- SU) as you wrote..

umm.. a question: what's the different between RI-NU-KKU-SU and RI-NA-KKU-SU ?

Thanks ;p

edit: i've understand that the TSU must be smaller than the other symbols...

After many years of seeing people tattoo words on themselves only to regret it a decade later, I can't help but ask. Why do you want an OS tattooed on your body? If you had been of my generation and done this with DOS or Windows you would be looking to have it erased by now.

I can understand that, slux. Many times I came close to having a tattoo done of something that was vital and/or life changing to me. Now only three of those concepts have endured the test of time..... my initial with the emblems of my heritage, the symbol of my spiritual identity and the name of my alter ego that served others for many years. And there are times even now that I question the design that incorporates those last two.

I am not saying don't do it, but I AM recommending that you think about how it will be to display it 20 years from now. It may still be valid as your entry point into computer science. But many of us had our lives changed by DOS, Windows and Linux in succession. The flux in Computer Science makes it difficult to find something that will not become archaic, if not obsolete, within your own future.

I would also advise that you keep it as small as you can while retaining legibility. Remember that the definition of the design will soften with time and you do not want it blurred. My "silver bear" is still clear after 18 years without any touch up, but it is far larger than yours should be. I had the advantage of only needing 2 fairly simple kanji.

If I may ask, any reason you want it in Japanese?

@TalnSG: umm.. ok, i just want a small tatoo.. justa a symbol for me, but not for all people! The size will be at most 5 or 6 cm * 2 cm.. it's small! i've meditate upon this tatoo for long time and i have other time to meditate...

@MMM: the japanese style and simbols are fantastic! It's a pity that "linux" doesn't exist in kanji (or i mistake???)

That's what I thought. And no, there are no kanji for LINUX.
