2) "Good luck in the test tomorrow."

I really appreciate all your help. I hope I'm not coming across as annoying just yet.
Being a newbie is no crime. Not asking is a kind of a crime.

For both of those two, we use 幸運

 is what you see as one of the possible 'degrees in fortune' when you draw the sacred lot at a Japanese shrine.

Would I be incorrect if I described "吉" as simply meaning "good luck"?

No, not at all. All you need to know is where it's used.

吉 【きち; きつ】 (n,adj-no) good fortune; good luck

Here's the dictionary defintion. I think it depends on how you use it in the Japanese structure, but I guess it's mostly like a noun. So, I think your first example is more like how you'd use it, but I could be wrong^_^;

Yes, you are wrong, unfortunately. We only see the word 吉 in the fortune-telling corner of a larger shrine. It's not used in normal speaking and writing.

幸运 means good luck, and I think it's the Chinese simplified.
