Post Kansai Ben - 05-20-2008, 12:44 PM

So I know a lot of you are studying Japanese so I thought I would put something fun here ^.^ Kansai dialect is one of the most popular dialects of non standard Japanese mainly because Kansai people are crazy and like to party woo!! Aside from different emphases on words and some grammar like using -hen instead of -nai in short form negative (like instead of saying いけない it would be いかへん)there are a few fun vocab to learn I'll add to this as I get time but here are a few to get you started. I'll list the English then the Kansaiben I'll do it in romaji so its easier.

1. Idiot: Aho
2. Not good/wrong: Akan
3. Thanks: oki ni
4. I (female): uchi
5. Because: Sakai (followed by ni always)
6. Mac Donald's abbreviation kansai style: Makudo
7. True/ really: Honma
8. Really: metcha
9. Goosebumps (this I actually had to have my friend explain yesterday because I didn't know it: sabuibo

And of course the most famous Nande ya nen? which is you have got to be kidding or what the hell, say this in Japan to your friends and they will laugh and say Osaka ben! it is a big stereotype and when comedians make fun of Kansai people they use this most often.

Enjoy!

Godd read, thanks for the info, I was thinking of making a thread about dialect questions.

Is it a good idea to really study up on the different dialects, or is it something better learned by ear while submerged in the language? I figure where ever you go "core" japanese will do, you'll probably just be made fun of for not using the dialect and/or speaking so politely.

yeah its not worth studying with any amount of seriousness, standard Japanese is wildly known, like kansai people know both and prefer to use Osakaben. I would just learn as your Japanese friends use it. This is more of a fun thread than anything serious ^.^

Enjoy!
いけない is 可能形 and would therefore in 関西弁 not be いかへん, but いかれへん or いけへん. いかへん would be いかない in 標準語.

the words u listed, i reckon they could be called traditional kansai words, but it is important to remember that some you very rarely hear, if at all. stick to standard japanese, u can never go wrong with that.

まぁ、外人というわいに言われたないやろな。。

I wasn't even attempting to make this a learn immediately thing blimp sorry if you got that impressing it was more of a fun with words thing, mainly because I was bored. Most of the words I listed I hear frequently with the exception of さぶいぼ because it just randomly came up that day. And yes your right its いかれへん or いけへん >.< I was thinking something else.

That is one hillarious video!! I'm afraid 99.99 % of the JF members will fail to understand it, though.

That video is so true. :P

I need to track down a video of a tv program they had on the other night. Apparently, anyone in Osaka will collapse and die when shot with an invisible gun or slashed with an invisible sword. It was hilarious.

If anyone is trying to find me… Tamyuun on Instagram is probably the easiest.

I was always told that a gaijin speaking in Kansai ben just comes off strange. Kind of like a Japanese national speaking with a Texas drawl.

Edit: On a note to the video: I never went to Tokyo, but when I was in Osaka the elder generation rid on the left side, but the younger just got on the opposite side of their shopping bags.
