DeathNote Translation -
06-20-2008, 12:29 AM
Hello All,
So I want to my nearest Japanese Market and I picked up the first four volumes of DeathNote in Japanese. THis is my first time doing anything practical with Japanese so, as I read the first couple pages, I would like to post my translations here so someone could check/critique them. I would put this on the translations sticky, but this could take many posts, and I didn't want to do that. So, with that said here's what I can get out of page 1 (the page before the measurements of the main character and the shinigami): The shinigami lands. Each day is the same repeated thing. It's dull. As for this world (I don't know the next line, I looked up the kanji for kusa in my dictionary and couldn't find anything) The human lands That's it for the first page. Also, how do you get two syllables to translate into kanji on the computer. I can only do one at a time, making me unable to type two syllable kanji, which is why I didn't put the Japanese equivalent above. Thanks jakeofcanadia Even if you're not too good, I am not either and it would be fun to learn from each other. |

I know, I am almost fluent in spanish, and through learning that I know literal translations aren't good. However, since I am new to this, it's really hard. I know grammar, it's the vocab that's forcing me to literally translate. I can't really scan. The binding is really tight, and if I were to bend it far enough to scan, it would make the binding really disgusting, which I would really rather not do. I will type out the text though, I just can't figure out how to convert two syllables into one kanji via a computer though.
MMM- well then, I suppose the best I can ask for now is, is what I have accurate? jakeofcanadia Even if you're not too good, I am not either and it would be fun to learn from each other. |

Ok, so I see that この界は is (as for) this world. but why is there a つて between (I can't write that kanji because when I try to convert kusa, it only allows me to translate the ku into kanji. I checked the link MMM gave me and I didn't find anything. with other hiragana, like かい I can convert the two syllanbles into 界)and the る?
Also Cyclamen- since you have access to the Japanese one on page 10, where the shinigami is flying into the human world in the word otoshita, or at least that's what I think it is, I noticed the "to" is written a bit weird. Why is this? same thing in the second box on this page after the kanji for tatara, which I cannot display either jakeofcanadia Even if you're not too good, I am not either and it would be fun to learn from each other. |

ok, so thatnks for that little bit about the tsute, really helpful because I was having trouble with another word and I used that and got, so thanks a lot. Also, on page 10, there are three syllables I don't understand in the second box. ばれし I can't find any dictionary listing for ba, bare or bareshi or anything else with those syllables.
also page 13 box 2, line 1, says "this is twisted" in the english version, I am pretty sure twisted in this sense is more colloquial in english, and there fore I can't find the the first few syllables of that line, つたくや I should mention that ya in the Japapnese manga is represented by another kanji my computer does not know jakeofcanadia Even if you're not too good, I am not either and it would be fun to learn from each other. |

Please see last post too, I am just adding this
2nd voice bubble, 2nd block, pg 13, starts with 不幸... Is it Literally: This makes as much progress as letters of unhappiness. The jist: THis is about as worthwhile as curse letters. However could someone help me to understand why there is a から at the end of line one and a しちゃ at the end of line 2? I do notice a lot of から's in this book, though. Do they have a meaning other then because/ since, or can someone just tell me why there is a need for so many because/since's jakeofcanadia Even if you're not too good, I am not either and it would be fun to learn from each other. |
