To be honest I have to agree with Shadow. I spent a day learning Hiragana, and same with Katakana. I forget the odd letter from time to time but that will go as I write more.

It was probably a good experience in game creation to make the game, as for learning kana though, if you haven't done it in 3 months then it's obviously not helping you very much. Hopefully that doesn't come across as too rude as you seem like a decent guy.

Though I do wish you all the best and hope that it helps others too.

@addictedKool : Shadow didn't tell him not to make the game, he wasn't rude and didn't taunt him at all. He was just stating his opinion that it wouldn't have worked for him and it clearly hasn't worked for the maker of the game, that's all.

Sorry, but when Shadow said "... But your wasting your time", that came off as rude to me. Maybe it's just me. Who knows? I would hate it if I created something and someone said something similar to me.

So long as you learn from the experience, I don't think it's a waste of time. Shadow, sorry if I'm accusing you as rude when that is not your intention. I was just stating my opinion is all.

I appologised for the comment cuz I was telling him if he wants to learn he should do it another way, although that it was good he was trying to combine his interests.

But thats the point. He hasn't learned. Its been nearly 4 months now whereas anyone else I've spoken to who uses kana learned in about a week? a month at most?

See, this is why I don't help people on JF cuz everytime I do - I get jumped on.

I'm sorry for all the bad stuff I said and all the feelings I hurt.. Please forgive me

Well, since it's been four months and he still doesn't know the kana alphabets, then let it be. If he wants to use up another 4 months to set up a program when he could be speaking/reading introductory level japanese by then, then well. Nothing you can say can help him. If he wanted help, he would have followed your advice 4 months ago.

Even though I already know my kana I checked it out and I think it's a good game. However I feel that better romanizations could have been used. It's just a suggestion but it would help more with pronunciation and also for typing in the future. Hope my comment doesn't seem harsh, just trying to contribute to making the game better.

Awww… take it easy guys! There’s no absolute right or wrong for most of the time (unless of course you kill somebody’s cat). What matter the most at the end of the day is you achieve what you intended to do.

Shadow has been well intended, though he sounded "rude" at times, I can see where he is coming from (and to a certain level I agree with him too). I did feel really bad when I first heard from him (damn you Shadow! ), but hey, he would not have pointed out my "mistakes" if he did not intend to help in the first place. So I took it differently, everyone expresses him/herself in different ways.

Thanks for the encouraging words addictedKool, the use case you mentioned was in fact quite a valid one. Of course I would hope to have Stackana extended to be useful in other scenarios too, but that is likely to pose as a great challenge. And it is not that I did not want to follow Shadow’s advice, he has his points. While I'd like to learn kana, my first priority is to try out new technology for making web game, and try to learn kana (if possible).

MissMisa, you are definitely a very fast learner! One day is ultra cool! Well even a person who can write Chinese characters like me might not be able to do that. Just because I can speak Chinese, most kanji characters are known to me by default, but I was trying to imagine how things would have been like for a person who does not know Japanese characters to recognize them. So yeah, and I did that game.

And thanks for suggesting SceptileMaster, some gave me the same feedback too so I have updated (and released v0.5) on my site. It is now using Hebon-shiki romaji rather than using Kunrei-shiki system, since it is more widely accepted.

So if you'd like, please go ahead and try out the updated Stackana now!

It's the same as it was before. Are you sure you've updated it?

Yeah, that's a caching problem of browsers. Sometimes if the temporary files on your local machine are not cleared then the browser will still reuse that file without downloading it. You may get to see the updated version (v0.5) if you clear your browsing history (and if you're unlucky enough, it won't even re-download after your cache's cleared).

That problem has been pretty frustrating to me at times too!

Tried it in different browsers that have a different cache and it's still the same.
