Doraemon was awesome!!! I read it about a year into Japanese studying, and understood about 90% of it, I had to look a few words up though.

Gah, those were the good ol' days...

Even one of my Japanese friend who is now almost 22 reads a chapter again from time to time. Definitely a recommendation from me, man.

That, GANTZ, and Bleach are the funnest and easiest to read in original Japanese IMO.

Dragonball is my ATF though.

I personally would avoid reading manga. I don't think it is a real big help (grammatically speaking) reading partial phrases. What will really help to learn is seeing phrases in their full length, with different way to use conjunctions and relative clauses.

As per absence of kanji, yes it is hard at first, but I think it can be overcome easy. There is not many particles to identify (and they jump immediately to your eye) like は、に、を、で. If you know conjugations you can easily recognize a verbs by its ending. Adjectives and adverb can be pinpointed as well by い、な、く、に、さ.
The main part is reading the whole phrase altogether and then starting to figure out how it is structured and from there translating.

The hard part is not the fact that is written in kanji or kana, but how hard and at what "level" the script's grammar is. If the grammar is too advanced, even if the text is written all in kanji you will never understand it.

I read "Love Hina." It's a pretty good manga.

I started reading "Ranma 1/2" when I first started out, even before taking a class. It's slightly readable with a dictionary and almost no knowledge of Japanese.

I think I'm going to try to purchase "Once Upon a Time in Ghostly Japan" soon. How long is the book?

141 pages, but consider half is Japanese and half English...plus a few pictures. Not a really long book...but serves the purpose.
