If you have a friend in Japan, borrow their mobile number when you register. That could possibly work.

I got in on Mixi back in like 2005 or 2004 when I was in Japan, so I didn't have to deal with that restriction, so my advice is not necessarily fool-proof.

I STILL don't have a Mixi. Is it really worth it?

Do you have friends in Japan? If not, no. If yes (and they don't have Facebook), yes (assuming you want to stay in contact in the way Facebook enables you to).
