Need help translating - 09-15-2009, 03:02 PM

I think this quote is amazing! So much so that I'm going to try and translate it into Japanese. Of course much of the poetic tone will be lost... but I'll give it a go. Any help would be great

"Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking. It's nothing to brag about. And those that preach faith and enable and elevate it, are intellectual slave holders keeping mankind in a bondage to fantasy and nonsense that has spawned and justified so much lunacy and destruction. Religion is dangerous because it allows human beings who don't have all the answers, to think that they do"

信仰は思わないで信じ方です。だから、信仰は良さと呼 ばれてもほらを吹くべきではありません。それに信仰を 説く人は人間の人文の気を押し込めていて、不徹底の考 え方を続けています。

つまり人間に宇宙について分かるにふりをするのゆるす ので宗教は危ないわけです。

Well that's the best I can do with my limited Japanese. The way to convey such a message while keeping the poetic tone and illustrative language is probably quite different.

There are a million ways to translate this and I'll just post my own attempt. This may not be the kind of help you were looking for but I find it almost impossible to correct yours as our styles are too different.

「信仰とは思考の欠如に美徳を見出すものであり、決し て誇れるものではない。信仰を説き、その手段を与え、 鼓舞する者たちは、多大なる狂気の沙汰と破壊を生み出 した幻想及びたわ言に人類を束縛し続けるインテリの奴 隷所有者である。宗教は、全ての解決策を持たぬ我々人 類に対し、持っていると思わせてしまうという意味で危 険である。」
______

You used です/ます, but that would be super-rare in this kind of writing. I'd say from my experience on the internet that です/ます is way over-rated outside of Japan. They make your opinions sound weak.
__________

The parts of your writing that I and a couple of my co-workers (all older, university-educated Japanese) didn't understand are:

思わないで信じ方です, 良さと呼 ばれても, 人文の気を押し込めて, and ふりをするのゆるす ので.
__________

Finally, you used だから, but I'd like to point out that it's too conversational.

A more acceptable word in this type of writing is したがって.
