You'll find that one of the best ways to check a katakana rendering is to look for the name on Wikipedia English and then look for the Japanese equivalent article to see how it's rendered in that article, as I did above. Note that it is バークハート. Now, there are other ways to render it. If, say, you are rendering it from Swiss to Japanese instead of English to Japanese, you could say ブルクハルト like Jacob Burckhardt, a famous Swiss art historian. And you are responsible for inferring any sarcasm. I was not being sarcastic one iota, and I honestly don't see how you could have read any into the post unless you wanted to see sarcasm. Projection and all that. |

You randomly confront me about a misuse of grammar in a totally unrelated thread. If it's not sarcastic, isn't that just a bit... pretentious? |

Recently residents in JF would tend to be off the track in several thread.
What MMM means, and I agree to, is that there is no rule or standard for letter direction of Japanese tatoo because letters are not used in common case of Japanese tatoo. Needless to say, general standard of letter direction is top-to-bottom or left-to-right. If you like old style, you had better change lateral direction into right-to-left. |

Most people would want their misused katakana corrected. This is, after all, a forum for Japanese. |
