Need quick translation help for a fan-made game mod - 09-22-2009, 09:50 PM

I'm trying to help out with a fan-made Left4Dead (zombie survival-horror game) campaign, which takes place in Tokyo and the surrounding areas. Ultimately, the players are going to be fighting their way towards the Maya Kanko hotel, where the finale will be. Unfortunately, my Japanese is mostly conversational, and sounds nothing like the professional language used in broadcasts, especially of this serious nature.

This is what I have come up with for a basic English script, and was wondering if someone could translate it into Japanese for me:

Quote:
"As of 6:30, a special state of emergency has been declared. The rapid spread of infectious disease in Tokyo has necessitated the use of extreme force to prevent further infection of the surrounding regions. In approximately 24 hours, the national defense force will begin widespread bombing operations to neutralize the contamination threat. Any remaining survivors in the Kanto region must evacuate to designated disaster relief and rescue centers in the Hyogo prefecture of Kansai immediately."
The only thing even close to this I've ever heard was in Evangelion, but I can't make out what the announcer is saying, and all attempts to find Japanese scripts have been a bust.

Can anyone help?

If you want anyone here to help you, you must either:

1) Offer to pay a translator to translate the paragraph
2) Give it your best attempt and hope a native speaker will correct you

I apologize, I wasn't aware there was a set rule for this sort of thing. I did read the FAQs and board rules, but didn't see anything pertaining to payment for translations. I do know some boards consider that kind of thing solicitation, and will insta-ban you for any kind of "I'll pay you to" posts.

But now that I know, what's a fair price for translation of a paragraph? This is all non-profit, just-for-fun sorta stuff, so, I can't afford much, but I'd be more than happy to pay someone a reasonable sum (via Paypal) for their troubles.

It isn't exactly a rule, but most people aren't willing to take time out of their schedule to translate more than a sentence or two without compensation. The fact that you are asking for a complicated translation adds to this fact. We have a couple of native/near native speakers here who often help out when people post their best attempts, and at least one professional translator.

The price for translation depends on who you go through (I believe you pay either per character or per word). MMM will have a good idea if you ask him.

Don't feel bad, 90% of the posts on this board are from first timers who want songs translated or words defined. I personally enjoy finding smart ass ways to respond to them but someone usually beats me to it. But anyway, i'm sick of studying law for tonight so i'll try translating your passage, but i make no promises.

6時半から非常事態が宣言されている。周りの地域にも 疫病の急蔓延が流行かないように武力行使は必要だ。 自衛隊が汚染の可能性を中和する無差別爆撃を行うこと になった。 関東一円の残存者は関西兵庫県にある救民所や公助の所 に今すぐ立退かなければいけない。

for some reason i felt compelled to keep it to the same number of sentences. the grammar should be ok but i'm sure i used some of those unfamiliar words awkwardly.

So where are the words "Tokyo", "in approximately 24 hours", "designated", etc?

How are you even reading 流行かない?

What in the world is 公助の所?

Study harder before you criticize other members.

And where exactly did Raiha criticize other members' Japanese? Don't think so highly of yourself to jump down the throat of someone who is voluntarily helping someone else out with a job that nobody else is willing to do. What a dick thing to do. You probably need a lot of studying yourself, there, o lord of Japanese linguistics.

My bad. I thought Masaegu was Japanese, because I've seen posts of him saying stuff like "except we would never say [poor Japanese phrase]." I guess you learn something new every day.

I don't feel like going through that wall of kanji but I will say that if it's a news report, it should be in keigo. Then again, you just provided a free translation, so I'm not saying change it, but maybe it's a "now you know" thing!
