This is absolutely ridiculous. This is not a case of kids being forced to sit in class. This is a case of someone saying "Hey, I want to learn Japanese. I'm going to find a website to teach me!"

This is not a captive audience.

I think the thing that's irking me the most is your illogical support for your poor pedagogical decisions.

That's just, like, your opinion, man.

Lazy kids should not be ignored, they just need to be taught discipline.

Wow. I think I've said enough. Do you even know what "opinion" means?

1) You think that using romaji in the beginning is harmful.

2) I don't think so because I KNOW of people who started this way, and now speaks amazing Japanese.

What started as a friendly gesture in teaching Japanese, turned into what people call, "Flame Wars".

I'm completely open to suggestions and I have taken your opinions into account. Yet, I am insulted only when trying to explain why I did something in a certain way. You can think what you want, but this is how I decided to do it. If you think having both romaji and kana in the same lesson destroys a learner, then that's your opinion.

Why are you so slow? Can't you start seeing things in relative terms?

What I did is exactly what you're trying to teach people to do, which is writing Language A using the letters of Language B.

Not cool.

Reply in Japanese if your Japanese is good enough to teach others.

Is this directed at me? It wouldn't be much of a forum if we couldn't discuss and disagree with other people's opinions.

1) I think that using romaji in the beginning CAN BE harmful. Language learning is not black and white---we both know that.

2) I think we both know that if you take 100 students and start kana on Day 1 and 100 students who don't learn kana until Day 100 the students that will know know hiragana and katakana will be at an advantage and will more likely be stronger than the ones that have only learned using romaji.

Will there be some strong students who have studied learning just romaji? Sure there will be. But, I think if you look at ratios the kana reading group will be stronger overall.

This is why I provide BOTH romaji AND kana.

For the third time, I am speaking in general and not about anything you are doing specifically.

I don't know about today, but when I first started teaching English in Japan the older textbooks, (probably from the 1980s) had katakana over every word of English, much like Sashimaster's signature.

When a student was called on to read aloud in class, which do you think he was reading, the romaji or the katakana?

Is there any doubt as to why most Japanese adults have such poor pronunciation and abilities in English?
