I tend not to have a problem with people asking questions that could be answered with a search. The thing that bothers me is when people ask a dictionary question. "How do you say 'lock' in Japanese?" is basically what you asked.

But it's OK. You're a serious and good student, so I believe you just got caught up in the moment and asked, rather than just saying "too lazy to go to dictionary.com."

And it's not like I'm the moral center of JF!

Now don't get me wrong, if you have a question about some words that are similar but you don't know their differences, feel free. I've asked here the difference between 堅い, 硬い, and 固い (all basically mean "stiff" or "hard" and are pronounced かたい).

Can you tell I'm trying hard to make sure you don't think I'm mad or something? Sometimes my writings come off rude, and I'm trying to avoid that! SO I ADD SMILEYFACES!

This isn't directed at you specifically, Kyle, but I know that sometimes yahoo.jp's dictionary (When you're in the 国語 section, not 和英) can help to differentiate between when to use each kanji. It also tells you usage rules for certain words with similar meanings. I advise anyone to check it out.

Yeah. When I have questions that are pretty specific, I tend to go to Google and search something like "固い　硬い　堅い　違い" and check out the results:
固い 硬い 堅い 違い - Google Search
100% of the entire first page of results are pages that appear to explain the difference.

Granted, my method requires Japanese literacy, but for those of us who have it already, it often is useful to learn kanji specifics or slight differences in connotations between words.

Agreed. Once you can start using japanese -> japanese dictionaries, you can get a lot more useful information than you might otherwise.

Recently i came upon this word 暴風雨. i was wondering how big a storm will be called 暴風雨, is a common storm big enough to be called 暴風雨?

Also, does トンネルする means tunnelling like “tunnelling through a cave” or the “tunnelling” in computer terms?
