Calligraphy translation - 03-19-2010, 01:41 PM

I have a painting that was done for me some decade ago. I am aware that I need to frame it, but it is A, expensive to do so in the West and B, difficult to find a person/place to do it -- I'm holding out for my next trip to Japan.

In any case, would someone be so kind to translate it for me. (The more interpretations the better!). And if possible, would you please write the kanji's out for me also.

Thank you very much.

Sorry but this is the wrong thread. That is a line by Li Bai in Chinese. I'll just give you the kanji.

飛流直下三千尺 疑是銀河落九天

I am unsure what this being the "wrong thread" might mean. Perhaps it's the fact that it is incomprehensible in Japanese...I do remember asking a native speaker to translate it for me some time ago, only to apologize for not being able to do so. In any case, thanks to your help I was able to find a translation and the rest of the poem -- it turns out that I had received only the latter half of it!

There's a specific thread for a single translation request already. You didn't post in it, hence the "wrong thread" statement.

Also, you really think it'll be cheaper to take it to Japan, get it framed, then bring it back to your country?

If you live in the US, go drop $10 at Hobby Lobby for a frame.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up.

The kind of frame I'm looking for is definitely not found at Hobby Lobby. I'm looking for something slightly more traditional, i.e. a scroll, if you know what I have in mind.

It can be done professionally in Japan and it seems it entails some precise rules and technique. Thus it would be quite expensive.

This work isn't even signed or hanko'ed, so I am not sure how much you should really worry about spending on the framing. You most certainly can get nice framing done without transporting the thing back to Japan (and getting more wrinkles in it).

Does the OP still want a translation about these 2 lines? I know this is a wrong thread so I am not sure should I explain it in here.

I studied this poem when I was in junior high school.

As Sashimister has already mentioned, this 2 lines are quoted from a Chinese poet named Li Bai (around the 7th century). He went to a place called Lu Shan and wrote this poem to express his astonishment at the beautiful scene of the waterfalls.

飛流直下三千尺
飛流直下 refers to the motion of the waterfalls
飛流=flying and flowing; 直下=straightly down into
三千尺 = 3000 feet
This sentence describes the rapid drop in elevation of the water flow

疑是銀河落九天
疑是 as if
銀河 the Milky way
落 drops/falls into
九天 the Heaven (an ancient Chinese word for Heaven)
This sentence could be translated into something like "As if the Milky way falling from the Heaver high above"

Hope it helps.
