I just wanted to check to see if my understanding of the difference between 省みる and 顧みる is correct. One of my new kanji is 顧, so it seems a good time to ask.

The first is for self-reflection, while the latter is about thinking about the past of other things and in a more objective manner, right?

For example,
昨日、ドラえもんをみて、子どものころを省みたよ。
vs.
入学式で：桜美林大学の歴史を顧みましょう。

Right. It's about "subjective vs. objective" or, in my own words, "emotional vs. non-emotional" or "emotional vs. factual".

省みる more often than not carries a connotation of repentance while 顧みる does not nearly as often.

Time for a new question, and this time it's more about some slangy stuff a guy is yelling to another who has stolen his onigiri and seeds:

にぎり飯はこの場で食っちまえばお終いだが種なら後で 甘い杮の奥がたんと食えるんだぞ！！

I don't particular stand the construction 〜ばお終いだ (something about an ending, I know) or the grammar in the second half.

I'm thinking the sentence is something like

If you eat that onigiri here, you're finished, but if you eat the seeds, [something about eating the very heart of a sweet persimmon??].

Suggestions? Thanks.

Edit: I've realized 杮 is a persimmon.

If you eat that onigiri here,you have nothing left.But if you take the seed,you can eat many sweet persimmon later.

柿の奥　is a typing(or reading) error.柿の実is correct kanji.

「おにぎりは、食べるとすぐなくなってしまうよね。だ けど、柿の種というのは、植えると毎年おいしい柿をい っぱい食べられるんだよ。」

さるかに合戦を読んでいるんですか？You tubeで、「まんがにほん昔ばなし」の「さるかに合戦」� �見れますよ。あんな風に今の日本人は話さないけど

New question: How are 〜棟 and 〜軒 different? They both are counters for houses, right? Is one more house and one more generic building?

I get the sense that 軒 is more for houses, while 棟 is a more generic building. Especially considering other words I know like 軒並み.

That would be correct. 棟 is used to count larger buildings than regular houses. Before there were tall buildings, the word was originally used to describe an apartment house or any types of buildings with sizable horizontal lenghs.

In informal speech, however, quite a few people use 軒 to count larger buildings as well but not really the other way around.
