Writing Japanese on the computer - 04-23-2010, 06:15 AM

I just have a quick question. I use that IME thing or whatever, and I have a hotkey to set language to either Japanese or Norwegian (+ English). (The latter being used a lot more for some reason )

One thing that annoys me a little is that the Japanese input mode has a lot of "sub-modes" for hiragana, katakana of different widths, (what are they used for, by the way?) and Alphanumeric which is useless to me as I use my regular input mode for that anyways.

Is there a way to remove the modes I don't use from the Japanese input language, and assign hotkeys so I can switch between hiragana and katakana without stopping right in the middle of the sentence --

-- I'm currently writing in order to change it?

Thanks in advance.

Not really sure how you go about removing anything, but I know some of the half sized stuff is sometimes used when filling in information online etc.. at least that is what I have used it for in the past.

I don't think your switcheroo should ever bring up the other modes. Hiragana mode should be the only one. You hit spacebar to get kanji, and you hold shift while typing stuff to get katakana.

Right.. didn't know the shift thing, thanks for the tip.
The problem is that it sometimes jumps straight into alphanumerical mode which requires me to keep clicking two buttons every time I make the switch.

When you open the IME, the box with the option has a little red ball on the left (at least in my windows version). Click it and from the box coming down select properties. There you can select all the default sizes and starting kanji dictionary you want.

Yes, but it still ignores it and skips to alphanum input quite often.
Default input mode is set to hiragana, but I still seem to get alphanum more often than not.

Haha, did you pirate Windows?

Well.. yes, I did. I don't get the connection, though - anti-piracy protection that works exclusively by insisting on alphanumerical Japanese input seems a tad ineffective, somehow.

No, it's just that you get what you pay for. To create a pirated copy of Windows, the uploader has to do some hacks (often these hacks have to do with language settings). These hacks break things. Legit copies of Windows do not have these problems.

i don't think theres a way around that since hiragana and katakana are two completely different things. but like they said hiragana can be changed to kanji if you hit the space bar.
