To any of you who are serious, I might also recommend the Japanese101 podcasts. They break stuff down into pretty manageable chunks and have different levels of podcasts based on how advanced you are. Not a bad way to start.

ohk this is how i learned it.. first go to Livemocha register they have free japanese lessons,and its pretty good. for more grammer and japanese writing go to this site Japanese Grammar Guide..it has all the alphabets,with pronounciation,stroke order(clicking each alpahbets opens a short animation which shows the stroke order) and more..
