Hello, could someone double-check this translation, please? - 06-02-2010, 06:56 AM

Hello, I am currently doing homework for my Japanese class, and this phrase is giving me quite some difficulty. The sentence is:

お医者さんによって、”まったく素人の話はわからない ”。

I translated as such:

When the doctor left, "Geez, I don't understand why the doctor can't speak like a normal person".

To be blunt, I have no idea how to translate によってas I have no idea what it means. Also, I am not sure I translated the second part properly. Any help would be much appreciated!

It makes little to no sense. Did you cut off any part?

That is actually the entire sentence. I'll post the sentence before that sentence for clarification.

あちこちに脱線しながら、ためらいがちにぼそぼそと話 す。お医者さんによって、”まったく素人の話はわから ない。

Good. That helps. Still, I'll have to pretend there is no quotation mark before まったく. You deleted the one after わからない.

お医者さんによって、まったく素人の話はわからない means, in poorly written Japanese, "Some doctors never understand what the amateurs (the patients) are talking about."

If there are actually quotation marks used, I ll have to go back to my original statement.

Woops, sorry I guess I did delete quotation marks! The dialog portion actually extends a bit further, but there's a kanji that I can't figure out for the life of me, so I omitted the second part. I'll post it right now. Nevermind, Figured it out!

OK. This is why I asked if you didnt cut anything off in my first post. You cut over 50% off! I wonder if I'm talking to Walmart.

What counts grammatically is what you see outside of the quotation marks. The first phrase you gave me never had a verb in it.

~~によっては means "Depending on ~~", so I was wondering where you got the verb "left" from.

Haha ok, that was my bad! So the sentence would then translate as:

While the conversation is digressing here and there, the patients have a tendency to hesitatingly speak in a subdued manner. And Depending on the doctor, there would be some who would angrily say, "Geez, I don't know why you don't speak normally. Please properly answer my inquiries".

I'm not quite sure if you understood that it's some doctors who are saying what's said in the quote. In your translation, it looks to me that you're using "people" to refer to non-doctors.

All I want t make sure is that you understand that 腹をたてる人 refers to some of the doctors.

Yes, I realized that taking things out of context greatly distorts the pov in Japanese, so I edited my original translation!
