Tsugaru Dialect or French? - 11-01-2010, 09:34 AM

Check out this new TV commercial for Toyota! The woman driver in it speaks in Tsugaru dialect and I can't catch a word of what she's saying though I'm a native Japanese speaker. So they provided subtitles!

EDIT: YouTube video pulled, but you can see the commercial here:

passo ハナ女子大学

-MMM

This dialect is spoken in Aomori Prefecture in Northern Japan.

That's crazu. Thanks for the video!
I opened this post thinking it was going to be some noob asking if he should learn French or Japanese via the Tsugaru dialect.

Aomori people are legally prohibited from teaching Japanese in Japan. So they have no choice but to teach abroad. j/k

Cool. I thought it was only my language that they had to put subtitles when they make a show where they speak in dialect.
Masaegu, in Italian I can tell what town/region a person comes from from his accent/dialect even though I might not understand what he/she is saying. I can pinpoint the area of origin of that person also by hearing speaking regular Italian coz of the accent.

Does the same thing happen with Japanese language?

I can't pinpoint it but I can usually tell people are form north east(東北) or west(関西) or south (九州) if they have the accents when they speak standard Japanese. If they lived in Tokyo long enough, for several years, they usually have very little accent so it'd be hard to tell.

I am confused. Where is the Tsugaru dialect. The first person is speaking French and the second person is speaking Japanese with a fake French accent, right?

My guess is both are speaking 津軽弁.

Nobody in that commercial is from an area that speaks Tsugaru-ben.

Riisa Naka is from Nagasaki and I think it is pretty clear she is speaking French. Morisanchu (trio) is not from that area either, so it would be weird for them to use such a dialect.

I think the joke is Riisa Naka is speaking French and the Morisanchu girl wants to look cool by speaking French back, but is speaking Japanese with a bad French accent.

Not sure how authentic they sound native Tsugarians but apparently they both are speaking 津軽弁

「わのかでパン、しけるめに鍋さフォンデュせば、うだ でぐめよ(わたしのフランスパン、焼きたてのうちに鍋 でフォンデュすればおいしい)」
「せばだば、やってみら(それでは、やってみます)」
