聞きます vs. 頼みます - 12-27-2010, 05:01 AM

Hi masaegu san, could you explain to me what's the difference between 聞きます(ask) and 頼みます(ask)?

For example:

先生にきく
Ask teacher.

パーティーに来るよう田中さんに頼む
Ask Mr. Tanaka to come to the party.

One is to ask a question and the other is to make a request.

Could you give me a few simple examples for both the verbs?

Also, what's the difference between:

窓を壊す
break a window

枝を折る
break a twig

Can I say "窓を折る"?

Forget "break" if that's preventing you from understanding the words! You have a tendency to let the translated English words get in your way.

壊す = to destroy/damage
折る = to bend a long object, to fold (paper and such)

You can answer that now.

Thanks for the help, masaegu san.

I am not feeling well now after what KyleGoetz san has said. But I still grateful for the help you provided. I see that coming from him long ago and he finally said what he want to say.

In that case, "窓を折る" is definitely wrong, since "折る" probably also means "Snap". And one cannot snap a window.

Exactly. To me, the interesting difference between the two words is as follows.

壊す always results in damage.

折る doesn't always result in damage. The best example would be 折り紙(おりがみ).

Thanks masaegu san.

How about "催しを行う" and "催しを開く"? Is it possible to use both these phrases to describe "hold an event"?
