Yes, exactly correct.

It takes a lot of practice to get good. In high school trying to teach myself Japanese, I was writing my name カイヨール due to lack of experience.

Yeah, I do agree that experiences are required in order to translate foreign names to katakana. The last sensei who taught me Japanese could do it with ease and I was surprised at how easy it was for him.

I have to make another confession on this board (possibly shedding some light into why I'm so rude sometimes to noobs)—when I was young and dumb in junior high or early high school, I thought I could write my name is 海留月 or something. So sometimes noobs remind me of how incredibly dumb I was about Japanese while at the same time being incredibly sure I was that I knew what I was doing.
