Hi. I just joined. While I am a "sansei", my father served during the Occupation of Japan as a member of the US 8th Army, Military Intelligence Service, and was stationed in Yokohama. He is a "kibei".
I am researching detailed WWII history and it involves old Japanese kanji. I believe this means BRIGADE or DIVISION, but I cannot be sure: 師搜 WWII Luzon Captured Japanese Artifact | Flickr - Photo Sharing! I believe it is read "シソウ” or "シシュ" . It is from what we believe is a Japanese soldier's identification tag. Can anyone translate it? Thank you! 申し分けございません。有難うございます。

Thank you for your input, Rickoshay. The current form of that character is 団. Therefore, 師団 is read "shidan", or (army) division. I am hoping to get verification on the correctness/read/pronounciation of the old character combination...
戦争中に使われていた漢字なので、たれかこの読みにご 存知ありますか？三世なのでヘンな日本語で申し訳ござ いません。

Guessing, I was asking him for the military term for "brigade" or "division" and he said "shidan" using 団. My apologies. Your translation was invaluable. Thank you.
