words: buy an electronic dictionary; i haven't ever seen a physical J-E dictionary I thought was really all that good; I had the Random House when I was much younger. And just wait until you graduate to a very advanced level and use the book's big brother, NTC's New Japanese-English Character Dictionary (新漢字字典)! And then I guess eventually to a Japanese-only kanji dictionary. Although I have myself never dropped the $ on an only-Japanese tome.
