No, it doesn't come from anime (at least to my knowledge). One of my Japanese friends' name is Sanyu, which is why I put it on the list.

I asked her via email. It appears that in my initial translation of the name I was incorrect though; it doesn't mean just "happiness."

She said her name is spelled as 三幸. San, as in "three" and "yu" as in "happiness." She's the third child in her family, so she's their "third happiness" ^_^.

I heard it for the first time. it sounds like a Korean pronunciation 'yu' - '幸' to me.
