How to say goodbay

Hi all!
In English if I meet a friend I say hello, but if I leave I say Bye. In Japanese when I leave a friend I say konnichiwa (like in Italian where we say Ciao when meeting and leaving) or there is another word as in English?

goodbye in japanese is sayonara, its a very well known word

Firstly, you never use 'konnichiwa' when parting with someone. Depending on how close your relationship with your friend, there are a variety of ways that you can say them.

As the earlier posters had mentioned, you can use 'sayonara' and 'bye bye'.
If you want to say, 'see ya', 'see you around' etc, you can say:
dewa mata
sore dewa
sore ja
ja mata
ja ne
ja
etc.

"Sayounara" is hardly ever used between friends unless they won't be seeing each other for a long time. Sort of like "au revoir" in French.

If you are leaving home or leaving for lunch you often say

"Itte kimasu"

Which is "I'll be back" (basically)

Sayonara is a pretty strong word. You wouldn't want to say that unless you don't expect to see them for a long time.

Mata ashita ne = See you tomorrow
Ja ne = See ya
