Japanese-English Electronic Dictionaries - 10-22-2007, 02:42 AM

What are the best ones to buy? (excuse me if this thread is misplaced or a duplicate)

I'm not a beginner at Japanese (rather advanced) and I can settle for one at any price really, but cheaper the better. I'd simply like to get one of the top tier ones, if I could.

Thank you.

Get a very good one so it will tell you not to use the term 'Jap' anymore.

Prompt responses but not ones I was hoping for .

As for the title, I'm sorry if it offended anyone but it should be blatant that it was nothing other than an abbreviation, the same thing I did for "English".

I'll be mindful of how touchy people are here next time. thanks.

A proper abbreviation is "JP", not "jap" which is racist..just letting you know. *sigh* I'm surprised many people still arent aware that its offensive..

Most people aren't aware that it's offensive because unlike the other more obvious slurs, this "so called one"'s meaning really depends on how it's used (it's commonly used between my Japanese friends FYI, and no - NONE take offense; It's also a convienient abbreviation). But since defending the use of the term would be like swimming against a rip here, I'll admit I've made a mistake and will refrain from further using it on this forum.

As for offensive, I find masaegu offensive. This innocent mistake doesn't justify you making a patronizing, trollish comment against me.

The one I use the most is for the Nintendo DS, actually.

漢字そのままDS楽引辞典

You can use the stylus to write in the characters, and it feels very complete.

But some Japanese ARE offended by it, so its better not to use it. If members on JF see other members using 'Jap' they will tell that member not to use it, just incase people get offended. We're just trying to be nice, tbh. Anyway, I'm not helping you with your thread so I'll just leave it at that.

I was doing a little research on Japanese electronic dictionaries recently.

The high end versions of the Casio Ex-Word Japanese/English electronic dictionaries have the ability to add extra software including the Kodansha Jack Halpern’s Kanji Learner’s Dictionary. The dictionary doesn't have English menus, but the Kanji Learner’s Dictionary software does have English. You can use the dictionaries kanji handwriting input feature (with a stylus) with the learner's dictionary too.

Here is a good review of the Casio Ex Word XD-GW9600 electronic dictionary from a blog. Also, here is information on the Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Dictionary from another blog.

The XD-GW9600 is not cheap, but if you are looking for something that has good dictionaries and all of the current features, the blogs seem to agree that this is one of the best models. You might want to look around and compare the Casio to the top Canon models before deciding what to buy.
