There is a whole seperate part of the brain you use to learn different languages, and if you've not used it before, it's sometimes hard to get it into gear. That's why most highschools require that you have at least two consecutive years of language study for graduation. If you've not learned a second language before, just work that part of the brain as much as you can by indulging yourself in movies, anime, penpal letters, and text books. The more you see and the more you get into the feel of the language, the easier it'll be to have it slip off your tongue.

Two months is actually a short period of time to be learning and understanding a foreign language. Some, it seems, have been doing that for two years and still at beginners level.

Could it be that you have been too impatient and trying too hard and doing too many things in too short a time? Doing it in a proper classroom environment and doing it leisurely on your own is two different thing that can yield two different results. That is why some people draw up their own study schedule like, doing half an hour a day, or 2 kanjis a day, or 5 hiragana characters a day, etc.

Whatever it is, one should learn at their own pace that they are comfortable with. Never forced yourself to take in more than what you can absorb.
