Help me Speak the Language - 11-26-2007, 02:57 PM

Hi! I'm new around here and I really would like to learn how to speak the language. I know a little but not enough to get by. I want to learn every thing I can. After I learn how to speak in I want to know how to read and write it. I have yahoo, MSN, and AIM. I can do voice chat too and that would probably help out a lot to learn how to pronounce the words. Thank you for your time ^^

You might want to try to Language Exchange area. There's more people looking there to help/be helped with mostly Japanese & English, but other languages too. Anyway, if you haven't already, I suggest posting there instead.

I would recommend trying to learn how to write and read while learning that language. Hiragana is the first I learned, and it was really easy.

I use this site: http://www.thejapanesepage.com/reada...p?article_id=2

At first I started out slow, only learning a few a day, but I got tired of that quickly. I just buckled myself down, found a good, work-less day to go without sleep, and said "Ok, tonight, I am going to learn how to read Hiragana no matter what."

It worked, actually. I learned how to read 37 characters in Hiragana in one night. The other 10 I knew. Course, then comes the ten-tens and the small tsu, but those are easy enough to remember. Its quite exciting to go around, reading things in the back of the restaurant I work in(I work in a Japanese resturant, everything is printed in Hiragana/Kanji and english). I may not understand much of it, but its still fun. Until I get told to get back to work.

I can read all of it, but I can only write half. I'll need to study a bit more, when I find the willpower.

Another great tool is this: Flashcard Suite

I just found out about this, seems better than having all those flashcards scattered throughout my room.

Learning Japanese one flash card at a time!

It IS hard at first, especially that backwards grammar, but something will just click and you'll get it. Find what it is you like about Japan and work out from there. I love the J-punk band "The Blue Hearts". I learned more about grammar learning the lyrics to "Linda Linda" than I did from text books! I think that sometimes we get so buried in learning the language, we forget why we wanted to learn it in the first place. Try to bring some japanese culture in to keep you motivated!

No doubt. I feel for ya. When I was first learning I'd take my dog to Little Tokyo and be instantly surrounded by Japanese tourist. Made things so much easier. There are tons of places to get a Japanese pen pal. When I write friends in Japan, I'll write in Japanese and English. They'll do the same for me. I'll correct their english. They'll correct my Japanese. It's a great way to learn and make friends. One more thing: don't hesitate to try out Japanese if you see a Japanese person. They aren't like the rest of the world: in my experience they'll be patient and tend to clap and act impressed when you've spoken a few words in their language. You get over your shyness really quickly!

I would like to learn Japanese - 12-14-2007, 03:36 AM

My name is Ed. I am interested in learning to speak as well as read & write Japanese. I was into the learning for awhile but the tv stations that aired the shows on how to learn Japanese went off the air & is replaced with Paid Programming.
I would like to learn because I am in a networking e-commerce business & I would like to have a business in Japan. I would also love to visit Japan too. I have wanted to go since I was in my 20's.
If you have any recommendations on any books that teaches from the beginning to advanced level on or websites, i would appreciate the help.
