Takashi Miike is the man when it comes to yakuza and gang movies..
kuroshiya ichi is the best.. though I like the manga better..

i loved "A Dirty Carnival", although it's a korean film. ^_^;;

"Chocolate" was a really good one, too. it's half-Japanese, half-Thai though.

I read the manga of Kamikaze Girls before and I guess it could count.
