Smile TOPIC: Why do you listen to Japanese music? - 03-20-2009, 11:22 PM

This has been quite an annoying issue to me for a long time now. I've been listening to Japanese music for about 4-5 years now. Every time I tell people this, they have to ask why I listen to music in a language I don't fully understand yet.

I have to ask... why must I understand a language to like the music?
Why does my taste in music seem weird to people just because it's not in English?
And why can't I simply like something without it coming into question by others just because it's different from what they like?

I faced ridicule in school simply because my music was in another language. Even the majority of the teachers thought it was funny and that I was a strange person. I have to say. It seems as though my taste in music has been questioned more often than my height... (I'm 6'10"... would like to see people's reactions in Japan )

How many of you have these problems at school/work/other places?

I listen to Japanese music because is awesome and I got tired of American music. Yeah people ask me the same thing why do you listen to that music when you do not know the language. Is easy I just tell them that I look for the translation of that song in English. But I do get really annoy with people finding it odd that I listen to Japanese music. I just ignore their comments. Oh most people listen to rap/hiphop, R&B, and American pop which they find normal music. I like to listen to other languages and I am not ashamed of.

I find it hard to take their complaints seriously when they listen to crap like Rap and Hip Hop. I don't consider it music... it's just talking to a beat, of which the majority of these songs are based around issues that have no place being in a song.

I'll listen to any music from any country and see no reason to be ashamed of it. If it's japanese that doesn't make a difference, if it's irish that doesn't make a difference, if it's american that doesn't make a difference, if it's of good quality, that makes a the difference.

i get picked on bc i listen to japanese music. If music is the universal language, does it matter what language it's in?

From the sky, To the ground
Rain is falling all around
Thunder rain and wind
A song of storms begins

Play a song, A melody
Then everybody will see
The hero of time
Has come

No it doesn't. Music is music wherever it comes from. And I'm going to annoy everyone by continually emphasizing this point. Sorry I can go on about music for far too long.
