by katars, do you actually mean Katals? a Katal is a kind of dagger made in India, i believe. it has a sharply angled blade, with a flat handle that you grip in your palms. the blade extends out from the knuckleguards...i'll see if i can find a pic
hmmm...interesting, maybe Katal is a mispronunciation, because i'm not finding any images or articles on them they've got quite a variety listed under katar.... |

Yep. The katar is an Indian weapon *sadly I don't know much about it coz I kinda dislike it*
No, its not related to the katana in way other than being a knifing tool! A katar is a more fluid weapon to weild. First up, it's got a small blade so its used for close combat only. You can directly see that your defence perimeter is going to be very limited with such a weapon. On the other hand, its easily manouverable so it allows for a more fluid fighting style. You could think of it as the "sai"... the weapon that...lemme see... raphael uses in TMNT. It's also the one Elektra weilds. They are small weapons too and they rarely have a sharp edge. Fighting with Sais usually involved piercing with the edge and blocking with the blade. I guess I confused you now more than clearing up things......sorry it's a blood trait of mine *Mwahahahaha* Omae mo kanjite no ka... kaze no koe? |

interestingly enough, the british made a variant on the katar that splits into three blades at the press of a button on the handle....they made it so that it would do the most damage if you stab with it, then turn it

I don't know, think about it this way, because you have to defend quickly the weapon has no blade...that's more of a reason to have a triton look, you can catch certain sharp objects, without worry of dulling the edge, very unlike a sword...I think sai's are more balanced in attack and defense than a katana...because you have to be in a good position not to get slashed by the oppenent's sword, and if anything slips, Up there goes a finger or arm...or both...The problem wqith a sai's offense is like a a long armed/body boxer, to a small armed/body boxer. The one with the most reach, just has to keep the other guy at length so he doesn't have to defend and only has to attack...plus, sai's usually come in two's one for defense and one for attack, kinda splitting the need, unless the enemy has two swords, then it's a hack job...katana's have their purpose, and sai's have theirs... -God good night... |

hmm...the Ono Dachi is the only longer version of a katana i remember ever seeing...it's not an execution sword, it's the same kind of sword Sephiroth's Masamune, or PSO's Tsumikiri J-sword is. unless you're talking about a nodachi, which is a long, slender blade with a longer handle, straight edged...it's made for thrusting, not for swinging
