I wouldn't necessarily say 'no' to IX, it is one of my faves and it was also my first FF. I think it depends on what you like.
If you really like sci-fi and action, you should probably go with FFVII. FFVIII is more realistic and romantic and is focused on a special military group. FFIX is VERY fantasy and is kind of medievalish. I was really into Zelda when I first played it, so I really liked it. X is also really fantasy, but not at all like in IX. It's more mature and romantic, and more spiritual. XII is about politics, imperialsim, and war, but I would not reccomend it for a first time. It does not represent the series well, as it was done by a different team. I can't say anything for the games below VII, as I have yet to play them. Just DO NOT start with a sequal like X-2 or "Dirge of Cerberus". You'll be totally lost.

if you've got a ds FFIII is a nice play,with cool SD characters and the job system is awesome

Thanks guys for the recommendations, it's much appreciated. I'll certainly get my hands on the ones you've said, after I've bought Rock Band
 I started with X-2, and I didn't really get it, like you said, so yeah, I'll come back to that one after I've fully completed the others

What's "SD"? Super Deformed? I've never heard that one before.
I just beat FFX for the second time tonight. It made me cry again. I hope the new FFs coming out are that good. Crisis Core was. I'm really worried about XIII. I think looks generic or something compared to the last several FFs.

I just began FF III on NDS a few weeks ago, but stopped due to NeoGeo emulation and naturally to ruin your Wishes and Throws to the next on JF.
But in fact I really spent long time on GBA 's FF Tactics (  ) Qu'est ce qui pourrait être plus beau que les fleurs de cerisier? さくらのはなが だいすきですよ! (Sakura no hana ga daisuki desu yo!)

! All these swords must be pretty heavy, it should be great to use them in a cosplay! It's cheaper, indeed, but I'm very poor and I don't have a credit card...
