Video Games to study Japanese - 10-29-2009, 03:25 AM

I want to increase my Japanese. I can speak a bit but really lack of Kanji so I want to do something about it.

Does anybody know good video games (e.g. DS-games) to study Japanese? Maybe some games for kids with simple Japanese, Kanji and Furigana?

Whatever you do, do NOT use My Japanese Coach for the DS... it teaches terrible grammar and in fact, some information is flat out wrong. I've heard of some DS games like "Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten" that are supposedly good for learning Kanji.

I haven't purchased any yet because they are quite expensive, and I would like to use two books with mnemonics that I already bought, but you can find games here:

JBOX.com Search : kanji

Also, this site has free kanji practice sheets that go by grade:

Kanji sonomama isn't a game, it's a DS version of an electronic kanji dictionary , but slightly less comprehensive than others on the market. It IS very useful ( it gives example sentences etc), but it can only -teach- you kanji in the same way any other dictionary can theoretically teach you kanji, ie, look them up yourself and then memorize them. It certainly doesn't make it fun! It's also aimed at Japanese people, not foreign language-learners, so be prepared to really miss out on understanding explanations and controls if you can't read japanese easily yet.

It does have a couple of mini-games, but they're for those oh-so-commonly-used kanji for say... foreign countries, and fish. Well, the fish one was useful for going to a sushiya, but that was about it...

You could look into "漢検DS 3" if it's kanji you are interested in learning.
I hope to get it myself soon.

I use those practice sheets quite often, but I'm still stuck at 1st Grade because that's where my general knowledge of Japanese stands so far.
