I would still understand, and I'm not Australian. It's not really exclusively Aussie people who say that.

Many words for that in Finland: Terve, Tere, Moi, Moro, Moikka, Hei and the list goes on and on and on because our language is nice and flexible so there is no limit for variations. Those I just said are the common ones.
