From what I know you need a degree before you could even hope to have a job as a Manga-Ka. (manga artist).
At least I know it's like that for foreigners. For anyone outside of Japan to get a job in Japan, you have to have a degree in the field you want a career in. They make it this way so people wanting to live there, contribute to society. They aren't running on the streets. That would look bad. But in the US. you don't have to have a degree to draw Manga for a living. ^_^ |

What are you looking for in the manga field? If you mean being an artist, I think all you need is an extreme amout of talent. But if you want to LIVE in Japan, you are going to need a visa, which requires sponsorship, which requires a degree.
There is no need for a publisher to sponsor an artist, because you can just as easily send your work in from a foreign country as you can from your home in Japan. Now if you are talking about working in foreign licensing, then that's a different story... |

Publishers aren't concerned about what degree you have if you are a talented writer and artist, but to get a visa to work in Japan, you are going to need a degree, that is correct. |
