I've felt many earthquakes over the years, but the worst ones I remember occurred when I lived in LA. These were the bad earthquakes which hit in 1992 and 1994. There was extensive damage, and quite a few people were killed.

There was a pretty strong earthquake here in Japan last July. I was at my girlfriend's apartment (which is in a tall building in Tokyo), and we could feel the entire building swaying. That earthquake was centered some distance from Tokyo, near a smaller city, and that city suffered some fairly serious damage.

I felt a couple small earthquakes here in Chiba a few weeks ago. They were strong enough to wake me from my sleep, but I just rolled over and went back to sleep again.
