I see.. So what's your definition of "being part of life" and "more than part of life"? Religion's about placing faith on a higher entity whose existence can't even be scientifically proven.. O.o I can't really tell the difference between Japanese "religion" and foreign religion. From what you guys're saying, the Japanese don't recognize their beliefs as religions at all, but "part of life".
But isn't that how most religious people see their faith as?

Well as a Person who grew up Christian, my life style revolved around Going to church each Sunday, (maybe miss some days) praying before going to bed, and special celebrations like Easter and Christmas. THats about it.

I have not lived in Japan long ( Wish I could have stayed longer) but I seen that every thing they do (ok not every thing but a lot more then over here) had some tie to some thing either Shinto or Buddhism (they have a lot more “Religious” holydays then in the US *more clear*) though they don’t see them as such, it is a necessary part of life too them as I said before If they don’t parade the Kamisama (god/spirit) around or don’t keep the shrine up to par, they may anger it. In the place I stayed one part of town didn’t do this, And the year before I came there was a murder, now it could have been a coincidence but it made them do it this year to please that Kamisama.

If you even have residence of any type, you`ll have medical care. It`s calculated on your previous year`s taxes. If you paid nothing the previous year, it`s virtually free. If you paid a lot of taxes, it goes up.

Medical care is only free for children and those who are completely unable to work.

It was my understanding that you have to be enrolled in the national health plan to receive coverage. When working or just living in Japan, some sort of insurance is mandatory. But no, it is not technically free but relatively cheap by US standards.

Well, you are required by law to register if you are in Japan for any period of time - which pretty much means that most people spending any length of time in Japan enroll.

Exclamation Ten Important Topics (with videos) - 07-06-2008, 01:32 AM

Hi, I'm new here and I just wanted to ask a few questions I haven't seen here yet.If you want more information on the topic, I have Youtube videos linked after the questions.

1) How much of WWII do they teach in Japan? I heard it's little to none and I asked a friend (who was a JFanboy...er Girl) about it and she said her friend who was living in Japan told her but she forgot.I have a feeling Unit 731 is a big part of it.I'd love to see some conservative Japanese person try and claim it was just a myth or something, considering Japan hasn't apologized at all for what that Unit did. I guess an American couldn't talk much about it since my own government was fine with sweeping it under the rug too.

YouTube - Japan's Dirty Secret - Japan

2) Where did this huge fixation with manga and anime even come from? I swear to Cthulhu, whenever I hear of these anime freaks(I'm actually friends with a few and they all seem to have a h*rd-on for Japan) talking about how much they love some anime or something for hour I feel like shooting myself. I gotta say it's like America's fixation of Dale Earnhardt Jr. taken to an whole new level.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEML4C2NQnY

3) Just how bad is the academic system? I saw how schools would take little kids outside in near 0 degree whether and have them stand there freezing for some period of time (I think it was just a few minutes but I can't quite remember) .They said it was to toughen the children up.Yeah like that Indian village who dropped newborns off a 50 foot building onto an outstretched sheet one after another did it for the childrens safety too right?

YouTube - School Bullies - Japan

4)I saw that the rigorous school system drove some to become like hermits in their own rooms, and in some cases they finally snapped after a few years went ape-schist (I'm paraphrasing of course), and went on a rampage killing several people. What's worse when the schools finally started to put more creativity to help kids try out things they might like and develop some individuality, many parents opposed it and sent the kids to ultra strict private schools where the teacher will regularly scream at and occasionally hit the child.I hope that's not that common.

YouTube - The Lost Generation - Japan

5) What do they do with drug addicts in Japan? I heard they first put them in jail, and then if caught again, they're put into a mental hospital (it might be the other way around though, again, can't quite remember). I know they have a drug control policy like us (like that helps), but does that process actually work at all?

YouTube - Japan on Speed - Japan

6) Just how much of the products they offer there are...well, pornographic? I mean I know they have things like hentai and "love hotels" but has this mostly been a product of the current teenage generation looking for some identity? I know we have a pornographic problem here to but there isn't alot of human trafficking there like Taiwan and Sri Lanka are there?

YouTube - Rape Club - Japan

7) Whatever happened to those humanitarian relief workers in Iraq who were taken hostage and when they were released to got back were resented because they "endangered the government policies".Is that part of that radical conservative moment I've heard so much about?

YouTube - Hostages at Home - Japan

8) What's with the whaling thing? I don't want to sound like some PETA nut, but why do the companies that still hunt whale in Japan say it's for "Scientific research" when the only use a small flake of skin for study, and the rest goes to restaurants?

YouTube - The War On Whaling - Japan

9) My friends said the Ainu were shunned in Japan because although they are one of the first people of the island, they were reluctant to assimilate, were racist (against who?), and too old fashioned. It took them hundreds of years to get a representative for this group who was just finally named a minority about a decade ago.

YouTube - Japan - The Despised Ainu People

10)Anyone ever hear of Issei Sagawa? Why did he get out of prison after just 15 months?I thought U.S court was bad with giving people three consecutive life sentences (how would you serve that?) and the death penalty, but this is just shameful.I sure hope this doesn't happen often.

YouTube - Night Stalkers - Japan

Of course I don't mean every Japanese person is mean or a right wing wacko, but I think it's kinda sad that Japan is displaying itself as this great happy paradise while blatantly ignoring these critical issues. There's so many more topics I've seen from these videos that I want to bring up, but I didn't want to put too much out there at once. This is apparently a British Television Documentary show, so these are just preview clips, man do I wish I has Digital Cable.I highly suggest you subscribe if you have an account though, looks like Youtube is actually useful for more than just watching a guy get hit in the b*lls.

Japan isn't displaying itself as anything. This is the reputation western fanboys like to think of.

Blatently ignoring? The issues you have raised (which are actual issues) are very big issues in Japan, whaling, court system, the Waseda rape club, etc... why would you think there are ignored?

10 topics is about 8 too many for one post, so pick the ones you really care about and I am happy to discuss.

I'm late to this party, but though I agree with Gloober (original post) about the passive racism (I use it to get lots of space on the train LOL!), I categorically disagree about business practices. I have customers in Japan and they are honest as the day is long. They call me up to tell me I under-billed them! They pay on time, every time, in full. Absolutely top-notch.
