I'm sure if I get out and about something will pop up eventually... but it's not worth being booted and never allowed back, not to mention jail-time.
What about prostitution? (i know these posts look bad for me, i have other genuine concerns and intentions when it comes to visiting Japan but these subjects are coming up in conversation right now among friends and possible travel companions here.) [edit] is it legal/illegal? |

2) Prostitution is historically present and open (look at any old literature or drama about days long past - i.e the floating world or the water world). It's illegal and permitted (maybe tolerated is a better word). |

Yeah, many places require an introduction by someone currently part of the "in group." They're usually run by yakuza and if they let e foreigner in they will probably tell you a way higher price after and attempt to exort more money.

Ok so im new to the forums and i spotted this thread right away so after reading all 29 pages im quite impressed with the sheer amount of informative post many people have contributed.
I myself have been to Japan numerous times but it sucks because each time i couldnt stay longer than 3 or 4 weeks so i have never lives there. What funny is the same complaints i see from people about Japan i hear about in other countries as well. There any many to touch on but i will use only 1 example. Many people complain about racism in Japan and I myself experienced it but only once. I did not get offended just like i dont get offended if it happens in the US. I am tall 6'1" 1/2 and am black American i dont think there are a lot of people like me just roaming around Japan. I am by no mean scary im pretty normal if you ask me with a love for a great many cultures not just the Japanese. Now we i meet or see a foreigner in the US i think nothing of it. That is one of the beauties of the U.S. we are huge melting pot so seeing different races is nothing new to us. But to the Japanese its very different and if someone plans to go there you need to realize that. You will be looked at because you different dont let it bother just keep doing what you are doing. Just like any country Japan has it problems every country has their own unique problems. Someone a couple pages back said he would rather raise his child in Japan with and hear about a murder (seeing cutting up in pieces and putting in bag post) sometimes then to live in the U.S. and hear about a 10 murders in one city. To that i say its all about the area you live in there are good parts and bad parts i live on the East Coast in Maryland just outside of D.C. and rarely have a problem. Now that poster is entitled to his own opinion but its very easy to be one sided culture. For example i could say i would rather live in the U.S. then a country where the pressure for school and work is so much it suffers from the highest suicide rate in the world, or to say that the Japanese work force is going to be greatly diminished over the next 10 years because its not only the worlds fastest aging society but has the lowest birthrate in the world and will be forces to rely on foreign workers to fill gaps in certain job markets. All these of problems are unique to Japan just like crime and huge amounts of illegal immigration are unique to the U.S. In the end we need to embrace different cultures for what they are different from our own. If you really want to enjoy Japan or any other country for that matter you need to OPEN YOUR MIND and embrace it. If its for you then great you have found something wonderful if not then move on the world is a big place. I had my ups and downs in Japan but i did have more UPS then downs and i met many unique and interesting people who asked me lots of questions because i was so different for most of them i was the first black person they ever met i didnt mind the questions since i tend to ask a lot of questions to people from other countries as well. Well thats my 2 cents i hope i didnt offend anyone and if i did I wholeheartedly apologize. Be Open minded people Curiosity did not kill the cat, Ignorance did. |

There is definately an issue of racism, but keep in mind that all tourists are interesting...
Just like any country there are disrespectful people, but to some extent everyone is rude. People from other countries will always be thought of as lower because they are not citizens, it is just the way it goes. This is because they have do not have very much experience and the residents do. |
