Because theres hard entrance exams to get even into high schools, so they study hard starting young, they are just at a more advanced grade level to begin with- i guess it carries on throughout their lives

It's probably because they have a lot more homework. I was actually doing a project on japan, and in japan and such places, they are much more serious with their studies, unlike here, in North America, (not to offend anyone), alot of people I've met seem to not really take an education seriously. So many times people in my class are told to take up their homework, and they are like "We had homework?"

WHOA. Back up. Remember what I said in the original post? Hmmm? I KNOW not all Asians are smart/brainy. The stereotype isn't always true (that's why it's a stereotype), but the sterotype is still THERE. Thanks to everyone that answered, you did it without chewing me up and spitting me out. We were talking about it in Journalism class the other day, and another reason might be that in the US, EVERY. SINGLE. KID. is supposed to have the same opportunity (or so we say) to learn equally. We were like, honestly, how many kids with Down Syndrome would you see at a school in China? None, probably. But, I've never been to China....................... |

And I don't remember seeing kids with down syndrome in my classes in America, either. |

Perhaps the Asian school curriculums have steep "difficulty curves" and cram a lot of content into semesters (math that was covered at my Australian school in grade 9-10 I learnt in grade 5 at Japanese school). There may also be more of a stigma attached to not performing well academically in those countries.

It is a generalisation, but in Japan many junior high kids have to go to cram school and study a lot to get into their chosen high schools (as opposed to Australia where you just pay more money if you want a better education), so I think this is partly why they're given the stereotype
huh? |
