What's the deal with censorship? You guys probably aren't going to take this question seriously, but I want to know. When I get bored and look at hentai on 4chan, why are pictures of penises and vaginas censored with a little black bar that really doesn't cover hardly any of the genitalia in question?

One of the biggest issues with barring foreigners (All those "no foreigners allowed" etc signs) is the mistaken impression of all those soaplands etc.
To put it simply - they`re not for having sex, and penetration is a serious violation of the rules... You penetrate the girl, and it`s rape right then and there. If the shop decides to let it go, they lose their license to operate along with huge fines should the word ever get out. So they`re all "foreplay". A lot (most?) of the foreign guys who decide to visit these places take them as brothels when they`re really not. The girls aren`t prostitutes, and I`ve even heard of "virgin" girls working in them. The massage thing isn`t a loophole, really. As long as penetration is not involved it`s perfectly legal. |

Actually, I'll give you the low down to settle this once and for all.
It's true that sexual intercourse is illegal in Japan but soaplands are an exception to this rule. They are the only legitimate fuzoku establishment which provides this "service". Other business such as deri-heru, hote-heru, fashion-heru, este massage, imekura, pinsalo, etc. will get you off in more ways than one and some will even offer you anal sex as an option but "regular intercourse" is theoretically illegal. Of course I stress the word theoretically because it happens all the time. Much like an escort in North America is theoretically getting paid for her company and nothing else. |

Why do I know this? Because I`ve had to translate for a number of guys who went and had the girl cry rape after they did... In the end, it`s illegal, and the shop is the one on the line. Of course, that doesn`t stop places from doing it, but it`s not something to be expected or you could get burned badly. |

Soaplands are an exception to the law :
Law bends over backward to allow 'fuzoku' | The Japan Times Online It may be a gray area but its well accepted that they allow vaginal sex. Mind you, like most Fuzoku services, they're more than likely to deny service to foreigners... or perhaps offer a menu with greater restrictions. |
