Aoyama Gakuin University

Hi everyone!

My girlfriend and I plan on taking one term or one year of university in Japan. We are both Fine Arts students, so finding a partner university (read: a uni we can go to) in Japan with matching courses has been a little hard. In fact, our best bet is Aoyama Gakuin University.

However, when we went check what courses were offered, we met a big obstacle: the English page for the School of Culture and Creative Studies is under construction, and neither of us reads Japanese--we will be taking classes starting in September, if everything works out.

SO. We were wondering if anyone here could help us figure out whether we can even go to AGU at all. We need to know what courses are offered to see how they match up with our own university (UBC Okanagan, in Canada). The page of the AGU SCCS is this one.

after having spent a couple of minutes i can't find any info on classes given in english at the faculty you are referring to. this doesn't not mean that the faculty is not offering any classes in english, only that i wasn't able to find any info on it.

here is a list of undergrad classes offered in english in 2006-2007 according to aoyama uni's homepage.

Thanks! But actually, we can probably take classes in Japanese as well, as we should be taking Japanese classes starting in September. Was there a list of courses (in Japanese) for the SCCS?

there are three fields
1. media culture
2. urban and international culture
3. art management

within these three fields there seem to be several courses.
which field/fields are you interested in?

in general, it usually takes longer than a year to be proficient enough to attend any course in japanese, but perhaps i misunderstood something from your post.

I know that it may not be easy for us, with only one year of Japanese learning, to take the courses that are taught in Japanese. However, I'm not sure that is a problem, as we are expected to take Japanese classes when on exchange. Learning the language (and the culture, etc.) is pretty much the point of exchange, anyway, so we might be okay with those courses.

Thanks for the file, RadioKid. That's really useful. I'm not sure what some of those courses are (eg. "Art & Design," is it a lecture or a studio course?), but we can at least be sure that there is some compatibility. We'll find out later whether they match up well enough or not. Thanks!

You are planning to take a year of Japanese and think you can take college lecture courses in Japanese and understand what is going on?
