I met few people that didn't develop a new appreciation for their home country after living in Japan. That doesn't mean they had a bad experience, but it is such a life-changing one.

It's like teenagers that hate living with their parents, but once they are on their own they realize that life at home had a lot of advantages they didn't notice until they were gone.

Yeah those things happen. thats just the way some people are. That example you provide, happen to my friend. He always want it to have his own place since he was 16. His parents gave him a chance to live by himself and then he came back whining that he cant pay for everything in his Home, so he chose to stay again with his parents.

I didn't really hate living in Japan. I hated working for a traditional Japanese company (you know with the old guys running it and not wanting to listen to your suggestions but expecting you to change things for the better, working 6 days a week 12-14 hours a day). Just not having a car, not being able to read everything, having a clothes washer that took 3 hours per load, (OK, maybe because I couldn't understand the directions ) stressing out from the culture. It was very stressful. I think Japan and the culture (even if it is stressful) is very beautiful. I made amazing friends, met my wife, did crazy things, and had fun when I wasn't working.
Teachers can make a lot if you are willing to work on your off time. But you'll miss out on all the best parts of being in Japan.

bELyVIS, thank you so much. You are one of the few here that gave me advice on this forum i could understand because it wasn't shutting my dreams down nor sugar coating. Thanks for not trying to convince me not to live there and at the same time thank you for gently telling me the stresses.

if it's been my dream to fulfill my dream then what more realness do i need? I've heard the "issues" and i haven't been swayed. How about telling me about more important stuff like the availability of nice houses, making sure not to have to much sake, what to look out for. I do not want assumptions of how i will feel about it.

It`s usually those with the highest expectations who take the worst fall.
Looking from a distance and actually being inside are two completely different things.

I`ve been here long enough that I hardly ever encounter anyone non-Japanese who has been here longer. I`d be willing to bet that the huge majority leaves within 1 to 3 years - And most of them leave with a feeling somewhere between "neat to visit but wouldn`t want to live there forever" and "worst experience of my life".

Living there is a whole different thing. Japan even drives Japanese crazy (usually they wait to flip out and kill their family or complete strangers). Visit for awhile first, then try living there. 3 years was more than enough for me.

Indeed. I know plenty of people who showed up after I did with a gung-ho attitude who left months ago.

I think Japan was enough like Korea in the obvious ways (bowing, no shoes inside, using chopsticks, ridiculous amounts of alcohol consumption, whacky addresses, and school system) that coupled with what I knew via anime, manga, movies, Japanese exchange students, and my own research, I never really had culture shock.

Korea was a pretty serious culture shock, and I doubt I could ever live there again, but it is the differences between Korea and Japan that is the reason I like Japan better. Not saying one is better than the other, but Japan works for me, after six months, Korea just didn't.
I was not interested in any of that. What's rent like, what are the possibilities for dinner, and (back to the original question) if one were to teach as a job over there, would you be able to support a family?.... that would be a start. >.> and how come i cant pick my avatar... do i have to get a certain number of posts or something?

And don't tell me "just visit first" because i plan on doing so. As a matter of fact, in college i am going to take part in a student exchange program in UCLA.

U need to know the good and bad side of any country u wanna visit, so u dont get shock when something happens. If your looking for other stuff then this is not the threat for you. Look for other threats that have info you want.

Bugg333, you seem to be giving off every signal that you want reality to be exactly like your dreams and have everyone do nothing but prop up your preconceptions. Your offtopic complaint about your avatar shows your lack of focus much more obviously as well.

Calm down and judge the advice given to you on its own merit, not on how close it reinforces your preconceptions.

Fortunately, there is one woman in this world who can control me.

Unfortunately for you, she is not here.
