Garbage? @_@ -
09-17-2009, 09:37 AM
Hi, it's me again. I'm sorry for asking so many questions, but I'm just trying to adjust and figuring things out.
Is there someone here who can explain the garbage system to me? I have all kinds of instructions on the differences between combustible, incombustible, and recyclable trash, but I still don't get it. Specifically, I want to know about: The foil-y looking containers that chips, cereal, cereal bars, and things like that come in sometimes. Is that actual foil (it's not aluminum, I don't think) and thus incombustible, or is that considered food container garbage and combustible? Also, the cardboard boxes that crackers and snacks come in (usually when they are wrapped in the silvery wrapping stuff)--are those recyclable or combustible? Junk mail. Is that considered recyclable paper, or is it "wastepaper"? Especially the glossy-ish things that advertisements are printed on. What is wastepaper, anyway? I think that's it specifically, but any other detailed explanations would be much appreciated. I feel like a stupid foreigner @_@ (oh wait, I am one...) Thank you in advance! EDIT: I live in Setagaya-ku (Tokyo), by the way. I received a notice about plastics being changed from noncombustible to combustible (as well as snack bags) but on my other sheet about garbage it says they aren't, so... I am confused. |

I live in another Ku so I don't have first-hand information on Setagaya. Hope the following website by Setagaya answers some of your questions.

lol I totally agree. I shop at a local Asian Market pretty often, and there's always this flashy packaging with extra stuff to contain things (bags, wrappers, foil, etc).
My Japanese still sucks. Feel free to correct me! Any constructive criticism is appreciated.((どうも、ナゴナゴさん!!)) |

i wouldnt worry about it too much. getting anal about it will give you a heart attack.
as long as you get things reasonably right then you should be ok. but do have a look at the packaging of crisp packets and other stuff,.... more often than not they'll have recyclable labels on it so that would mean it falls into non-combustible. i think waste paper is the glossy stuff while recyclable is non glossy. i could be wrong though. as long as you dont have bottles and cans in the burnable bags then the grabage nazi's should leave you alone. |

Recently garbage separation has become a little less complicated. You can now (in most places) put plastic bags, lids, and small containers in your burnable trash bag. Plastic bottles, glass bottles, metal and aluminum cans must still be separated.
I tend to buy refills when I go shopping, that way I have less bottles to throw away. Refills are available for things like laundry detergent, body soap, shampoo, and other products. The refills come in bags, which can then be tossed into the burnable garbage after you empty them. If all of this is too much for you, you can do as I see people at do (in the middle of the night), and just take your bagged garbage and put it in someone else's bin. Wear your ninja clothes so you don't get caught. |
